Like a Breath in Light
For years I have been fascinated by the constant change and beauty of light on the surface of the big lake Näsijärvi in Tampere. That is why I constructed in 2002 a special kind of panorama pinhole camera and a method to capture that light into my images.
When making these images I always stood on the same shore, on the
same spot
and faced to the same
direction. In this way during years I captured the
light of the lake in different days and months.
Exposure times
were long and during them I have held the panorama pinhole camera on my lap to absorb into the images also the movements caused by my breathing.
I was inspired by the text "Like a Breath in Light" by Rudolf Steiner:
When the atmosphere of melancholy is stimulated in people
by the rising mist,
then here it is so that thoughts, but also a mood,
have learned to breath, in so to say beyond-human freedom
at the sight of this diabolic flooding sea of light.
That is a special relationship which the human can have
with the surroundings for then it is possible
to actually rise
to the feelings so that thought is like breathing in light.
The human feels thought like a breath,
but like a breath in light.
